Books I completed in 2017

The photo is from January 5, 2018, when the University City Library delivered books to Crown Center's home-bound readers late on a Friday.  A day late, and nobody knew the books were in.  So I loaded up all of the deliveries and took them to people in both buildings.  Otherwise, readers would have had to wait until the office opened again on Monday to get the books they wanted to read.  I parked my cart in the Crown Center library to take this photo after I had started distributing the bags of books.

Great list of books for 2017! I love that you are the care taker of all things books in your center; I am sure the other residents appreciate it!

My friend Donna, a former librarian, set up the library when it opened in a new space in the building. She and I, along with a third person, are the ones currently re-shelving books that are returned through the slot at the end of the counter. Residents sign books in and out themselves. If one goes missing, it's no big deal, since all books are donations and nobody has a record of what books we have at any given time. Donna and I generally know what's on the shelves, partly because we also go through the boxes of donations and choose those that we think are likely to be borrowed and read. We also donate to a big bi-annual book sale at the Jewish Community Center all those books that don't fit our needs and toss into the "round file" any that are too torn up, marked up, or stained. Our little library at the Crown Center is only one library our residents use.

Usually, books delivered from the University City Library (a second library available to us) are left in the office to be picked up by each person or someone volunteers to take the bags of books to those who can't get downstairs to the office. Each "home bound" patron has a bag (as in the photo above) with name and apartment number, which is how I knew where to deliver each one, even if I didn't know the person. "Home bound" means they can't get to the library, whether because of infirmity or lack of a car.

Our third library is the county library, but our nearest one has just been torn down so a newer one can be put in its place. In the meantime, those of us with cars can go to a different branch or to library headquarters for books from the county system. The Mid-County branch currently being replaced is where Donna worked before she moved to Chattanooga, where we opened a bookstore together more than a decade ago.

And some of us are patrons of a fourth library, the one in the city of St. Louis. That's different from St. Louis County, where we live. One resident is still working in the downtown library, and another resident retired from a fifth library (the one at the Jewish Community Center). Can you tell that we have many book lovers among us?

I happened across this old post today and saw the "old" paper bags in my cart. We updated to cloth bags in October 2019. You can see them in my blog post, here:
