March is Women's History Month

Since many of the women's suffrage centennial celebrations originally scheduled for 2020 were curtailed, the National Women's History Alliance is extending the annual theme for 2021 to "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced."

Women have come a long way ... although it often doesn't seem that way. I remember in 1977 when my husband and I moved to North Carolina from NY State. I had a job in a hospital and decided it was time to open my own checking account ... because my husband's was all connected to his business and we wanted it separate. I went to a bank and they told me that the only way that I could have an account in my name in NC was with written consent from my husband!!

"We've come a long way, baby!" But maybe not yet far enough. When I got a job right after graduating from college in 1975, my pay was only 2/3 of what the man before me was making. It was like I was only a partial person.
