Ah, I got your clues, did a little Googling, and it's A Wrinkle in Time! My cover had a pegasus on it :-)
A Wrinkle on Time. Madeleine L'Engle. I don't know that cover, but the story is there on it.

I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to read Picoult's new one. She is hit or miss for me.
Ali, it's a very depressing book. Well written, but very dark.
