Someone came into my house during the night and took my laptop while I was there asleep. I had been awake more than an hour before I decided to check my email and discovered my computer was missing. After calling 9-1-1, while waiting for the police to arrive, I figured I wouldn't make it to church this morning. However, when the officer left, I decided I could possibly get there, even if a bit late.
I arrived at St. Marks United Methodist Church just after the first hymn. Here are the children singing, on this Pentecost Sunday. See all the red people are wearing? Even the organist has on a red shirt for Pentecost.
I'm still shaken up by the thought that someone was in my house during the night. "They" knew I was there because I fell asleep reading, with the light still on over my head and the door "they" apparently used is near the door to my bedroom. That's brazen! I woke up late, wondering why Kiki didn't wake me up earlier, wanting to eat. She must have been still hiding. I felt better being with friends, and now I should go home and hold Kiki, who may be still scared.

What a horrible feeling to know that someone was in your house during the night.

Bonnie, I am so sorry that your space and your possessions were violated. I am so happy that your person and Kiki's are safe. You are in my prayers.

Oh Bonnie, I am so sorry to hear that happened! Aside from losing your laptop, it's creepy to think someone was in your house while you were there. I hope you do something to make you feel safe tonight. My thoughts are with you.
Oh shit! How awful!
Wow, I can't believe that happened to you! Can you get new locks, deadbolts? I guess you can count your blessings and be glad you were not hurt, but it is still so invasive. {hugs to you}
Oh my gosh, how frightening! Glad you're ok. My laptop was stolen from my daughter's apt. Someone had a key and got in... we think it was the sticky fingered maintenance man.
Thanks, Marg, Carol, Helen, June, Susan, and Joyanne, for your prayers and concerns.
The locksmith (who had been called, had arrived more than two hours later, and was . IN . THE . PARKING . LOT!) would not install deadbolts yesterday, even if I paid him with MY money, because I'm not the owner (I rent) and the assistant manager of this gated complex would not drive over here to sign the papers ... probably because it was cheaper to install them on a Monday than a Sunday.
This morning, deadbolts were installed on my front and back doors. Last night, not feeling safe, I propped a plank under the doorknob of the door that opens inward and leaned a cane and an umbrella on the door that opens outward, hoping if someone opened it the clatter would scare them off.
What about your windows? I would have an alarm put in just to be safe. That would wake you up and scare the person off. Did they do any damage trying to get in?
The door was jimmied, according to the locksmith and the police officer, but it didn't take much. What was there could be popped open with a credit card, they said. I'm glad they were in and out without waking me -- I might have been hurt or dead, if I had tried to stop them. I'll look into getting window alarms.
Oh my gosh, Bonnie...I'm so sorry to hear this! But so glad to know that you and Kiki were not hurt, though I know the emotional wounds will take a while to heal. We had a break-in years ago when our children were small. They cut the phone lines, then broke the window in my daughter's room to get in. We were picking glass out of her stuffed animals for weeks. So I know how devasting this violation is. My heart goes out to you---you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Beth
That's really creepy to have someone in your house while you were asleep. I'm so sorry.
Beth, it sounds like your break-in was worse than mine. At least I have no children in the house.
Jan, thanks. It does feel creepy, and I wake up after only a few hours sleep now.
