READ
I found a thoughtful post by Verbivore, who used her entire About Me section to tell us why she reads. I love it! She starts with a simple sentence, "I read." Makes me think of the Latin "Cogito, ergo sum" which means "I think, therefore I am." Could it be that Verbivore is saying, "I read, therefore I am"? What a thought! Now tell us, please, why do YOU read? (I'll post my reasons in the comments tomorrow.) Go read her post, then come answer the question:
do you

I read because it is like breathing - I HAVE to read...the books call to me. I love falling into a good story, being wrapped up in the lives of the characters, escaping into their world. The hours fly by when I'm reading a good book. Some of my books are like old friends that I re-visit from time to time; they never disappoint me! Reading is about stories and imagination and creating...all the things I love!
I read because it helps me relax; it helps me escape; it challenges me; it stimulates me; it fires my imagination; it improves my own writing; it teaches me things; it helps me free myself.
I read because I love stories and story telling and life is all about stories.
I read because I love books and the smell and feel of books.
I read because I love words, their form, their function, their creation.
There, I think that's enough to be going on with for now :-)
I love all the different things that people can say about why they read. What a great question!
Wow, 'verbivore' said it so eloquently! I can't wait to see whay your answer is!
Reading for me is traveling to scenic places, having adventures, solving mysteries, escaping the everyday life, enjoying the language and words, being amazed at the ability of writers, and transitioning from wake to sleep at night.
Love your site, so many books you have read, and you remember them all - you told me that once!
The first thing I thought of in response when I finished reading your post and the simplest answer for me is: I read because I can't imagine not reading.
There are many more mundane and exacting reasons for why I read. But, the most important one is reading is part of who I am.
