Bonnie's Quiz

Many of us book buddies have been sending around a list of questions to "learn" about each other. I've lost track of who I got the list from, and sent it to, because we've overlapped so many times. Okay, here's a different list of questions we can answer in one spot and compare answers with each other:

1. What's so special about your favorite book?
2. When was the last time you wrote in a book?
3. When was the last time you colored in a coloring book?
4. What's the coolest invention, in your opinion?
5. What song do you have stuck in your head?
6. What do you think of standardized testing?
7. Have you ever been rushed to the emergency room?
8. What languages can you say "I love you" in?
9. What's the most addicting website for you?
10. What's under your bed?

1. What's so special about your favorite book? Although I have many "favorite" books, Jack Finney's Time and Again always comes to mind. This is time travel at its best, with the main character using only atmosphere and his mind to put himself into the past. Illustrator Si Morley steps out of his 20th-century apartment, one night, right into the winter of 1882.

2. When was the last time you wrote in a book? I have to be very sure I want to keep the book before I underline or make notes in it. As a seller of used books, I learned that marked up books don't sell as well.

3. When was the last time you colored in a coloring book? With my youngest granddaughter, but I really like to do it occasionally.

4. What's the coolest invention, in your opinion? I have to say computers and the World Wide Web. Isn't it great that I can be friends with Margreet in the Netherlands, Simrit in India, Marg in Australia, several of you in Canada, and Marylyn when she moves to Korea this month? (When she visited me in Chattanooga yesterday, she promised to keep in touch, and I encouraged her to start a blog about Korea.)

5. What song do you have stuck in your head? Today it's "American Patrol," a march tune that we played in marching band. I first heard it about 1953, when I joined the band in Junior High School.

6. What do you think of standardized testing? I think it has been overdone, with teachers thinking they must "teach to the test" so their school won't look bad. That means teachers aren't encouraging students to explore the really interesting things in science, math, and literature classes.

7. Have you ever been rushed to the emergency room? Yes, as an 18-month-old bleeding profusely from the head. Mother had been playing with me on my parents' bed one evening, and I bounced off, cutting my head on my baby bed. Head wounds bleed a lot, even when they aren't all that serious, so Mother got very bloody in the ambulance. But she told me I pointed to various things while getting stitches, saying, "What's that?" and "What's that?" Yep, that's me, always wanting to know about things. I don't remember this, but she did, probably because it traumatized HER ... lol.

8. What languages can you say "I love you" in? Three, English, Latin "amo te," and sign language, with the I-and-L on one hand. My grandchildren wave good-bye to me with their fingers in that sign, and I love it.

9. What's the most addicting website for you? My own. I went from this one blog to several: one on books, one on the environment, one on my quest for living a good life, and one for my red hat group which we call "Plum Crazy Red Hat Mamas." How many of you are red hatters?

10. What's under your bed? A flat box for extra blankets, and lots of room for my cat Kiki to hide in a hurry when she suddenly realizes I'm trying to catch her for something dreadful, like going to the vet for her annual shots. Otherwise, the only things there are dustbunnies and ballpoint pens that escape when I fall asleep while making notes about the books I'm reading.

Chris's answers, for comparison:

1. My favorite book is Jane Eyre. I guess it's my favorite because Jane has a hard life. She's poor, plain and strong willed. Still, she overcomes. She gets her man without compromising her morals. I also love how atmospheric it is. And Mr Rochester isn't half bad either!

2. I usually just write my name, if I'm lending it out.

3. Surprisingly, even though I have a 4 year old, I can't remember. She likes to draw, not colour.

4. I'm with Bonnie: the Web. Anything you need to know is on the web.

5. "Taking Care of Business" I've heard it twice today.

6. I don't have an opinion, right now. I'm sure I will once dd starts school.

7. I had a concussion when I was 6 years old. I spent a couple of days in the hospital.

8. Two: English, of course and French: Je t'aime.

9. YouTube. Crazy stuff on there, man!

10. A pair of boots, a purse and a frying pan. Nothing kinky about the last one. I bought it a few months ago and had nowhere else to put it. Remember I don't have a house!

Hi Bonnie, Great questions this was lots of fun.

1. It is hard to narrow it down to one book and I think it is a tie between Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe. I like this book because it is all about overcoming adversity. Also I love The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book speaks directly to me about living your life’s dream.

8. English and sigh language only. Every time I go to a new country I think I will learn the language but over the years I only know a hand full of words and they are all different languages

9. The most addictive web site for me is EBay. Except for right this moment it is the U.S. Forces web site. I am trying to find and apartment before I get there so I don’t have to stay in the barracks.

10. Shoes!!!!! They are everywhere, the ones under my bed are my running shoes, I like to have a pair to match each running outfit and then I have my favorite pair to run my semi annual fitness test.
