International Women's Day

Since today is International Women's Day, it seems appropriate to share a book about women.

Women's History Month & International Women's Day

March 8th is reserved each year across the globe as a day for encouraging everyone to stand up for women’s rights and gender equality.  The first celebration took place in Chicago in 1908.

The first International Women's Day was in 1911, but it really began in New York City on March 8, 1857.  That's when female textile workers marched in protest of unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women.  It was one of the very first organized strikes by working women, during which they called for a shorter work day and decent wages.  If you click HERE or on the label below this post, you can read what I have written in other years about International Women's Day.

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8, yet the global campaign theme continues all year long to encourage action.  The theme for 2022 is "gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow."

We can all play a part in helping build an equal world.

International Women's Day

March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.  The first International Women’s Day gathering in 1911 was supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.  The day, which has now spread all over the world, also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.  Today, President Biden signed an executive order establishing a Gender Policy Council within the White House to focus on uplifting the rights of women and address gender-based discrimination and violence.  By establishing the council, Biden said, his administration shows its commitment "to ensure that every domestic and foreign policy we pursue rests on a foundation of dignity and equity for women."

International Women's Day ~ March 8th

Today is International Women's Day on the eighth day of March in Women's History Month.  I plan to wear purple today to celebrate.  Update:  Sharon will color one of the sheets from the bulletin board.  Nobody has chosen Florence Nightingale, Marie Curie, or Sally Ride yet.

International Women's Day

I've written about International Women's Day twice before on my blog:

• in 2010, when I talked about women having children "on our backs," and
• in 2017, when the theme was "Be Bold for Change."

Today, inspired by my friend Jean on Facebook, I'm paying tribute to my mother.  She was my best teacher and my inspiration as I watched her stand up for what's right and saw her teach an adult class in her church for over 40 years.  She lived with me for 25 years.  I miss you, Mom.

International Women's Day ~ March 8th

The first International Women's Day was in 1911, so today is the 100th time this event has been celebrated.  This photo by NaPix - Hmong Soul shows "Black Hmong woman Khu, planting rice with her baby, Mi Tu, on her back all day long."  When I ran across this photo, I thought about childcare.  Mothers have their children "on their backs" always, even if not physically. Women are the ones who feel the weight of caring for the children.
