While reading The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson (2018), I came across this sentence.
"Joanie and Chris were dressed as Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, who, Joanie often insisted, should have ended up together" (p. 303).
So do you remember who Hermione ended up with? Who do you think it should have been? Now see a YouTube explanation of what J. K. Rowling did — and maybe more importantly, why she did it. Please weigh in with your thoughts.

Venus is "famous" in my family because that's how my parents met. My dad was coming from his high school art class with another boy, on the way to wash their hands in the boys' restroom. They had been drawing the famous Venus, with chalk I think. I remember seeing some of Dad's artwork done in chalk. The other fellow said, "Elmer, there's your red-headed Venus." And he pointed at my mom, who was on duty checking hall passes. A couple of decades later, I took art from the same teacher at the same high school, and she remembered teaching my dad.
Decades later, when I had children of my own, Mom gave silly gifts to all of her adult children. My sister got a blonde angel doll, and this is what she gave me. Seeing the doll with red hair gave me an idea, and I "got back" at Mom by naming it Venus. My mother laughed at the joke, and I still have this silly doll. Every time I notice it, I think of my parents in high school, seeing each other for the first time. It makes me smile because Venus, the Roman goddess of love, brought my parents together.

The Lost for Words Bookshop ~ by Stephanie Butland, 2018, fiction
Having just read The Bookshop of Yesterdays, I seem to be in the mood for stories about bookstores.
I do wish Harry and Hermione had ended up together. But the best books don't end up the way we hope they do. I'm not sure why, but I do think that's true.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely story about the way your parents met. How unlikely is it that they ever should have met? My parents, too, though their story is nowhere near as romantic a setting as that of yours.
My parents were students in the same 3-year high school, but not in the same grade.
ReplyDeleteI was okay with Ron and Hermione ending up together, probably because I have a friendship like Harry and Hermione's and we shouldn't be together. :-) However, I think the on-screen chemistry between Harry and Ginny is terrible and that's why the movie viewers felt that was a bad match.
ReplyDeleteAre you able to mingle with Donna and other friends now that you are all vaccinated?
Not yet. We're waiting two weeks for the full effect, but Donna ordered a meal for us yesterday. I waited outside for our delivery and took it to her. We then ate in our separate apartments, though.
ReplyDeleteWhile the Harry Hermione pair might have taken us on a whole different storyline, I do think they were best as friends; I do like the Ron-Hermione pairing; as for Harry, I recall leaning towards the Harry-Luna pairing..
