What are your literary “pet peeves”?All the book covers showing women without heads! I hate it! What's up with that? Why, oh why, do designers think women's heads are unnecessary? Do only women's bodies matter? Do they dislike women's faces? What??!!?? As far as I'm concerned, it looks ridiculous. Here are a few examples, so tell me what YOU think.
I completely agree. What is the message they are sending exactly?!
ReplyDeleteAmen to the headless women or cut-off heads on book covers! It's like they didn't have the rights to the woman's image, so they had to get rid of or mangle it. (The only pleasant association it has for me--is it reminds me of my grandma's picture-taking abilities. Every batch of photos had at least one--if not more--headless person in it. Lol) Here's my list: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2012/04/booking-through-thursday.html
ReplyDeleteI hate that too, but I get why they do it. I think they figure that each person is going to imagine the main character differently and if the face on the cover doesn't match up to the imagination then people won't like it. Plus people have different ideas of what constitutes a pretty/beautiful face. This way everyone gets to fill in the head with whatever they find in their imagination. I'd honestly prefer either a personless cover.
ReplyDeleteGood call. It's not a peeve of mine, but it is a weird trend. I agree with Alyce about why they do it though.
