Life isn't like the movies, and eleven-year-old Turtle is no Shirley Temple. She's smart and tough and has seen enough of the world not to expect a Hollywood ending. After all, it's 1935, and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce. So when Turtle's mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn't like kids, Turtle says goodbye without a tear and heads off to Key West, Florida, to stay with relatives she's never met. This is a 2011 Newbery Honor Book.I've already read this one, the same day I brought it home. It has a boy who thinks literally, like Epaminondas and me.
Turtle: "Mama's head is so high in the clouds, I'm surprised she doesn't bump into Amelia Earhart."Turtle is a spunky little girl, and I really liked her. I rate it 10 of 10, because I couldn't put it down.
"How can your mama's head be up in the clouds?" Buddy asks. "Ain't it attached to her neck?"
Around the Campfire ~ by Peter, Paul, and Mary, 1998, music (2 CDs), plus a book of sheet music, 9/10
Disc 1: This land is your land — Garden song — Kisses sweeter than wine — It's raining — Somos el barco — If I had a hammer — River of Jordan — Light one candle — Where have all the flowers gone — Inside — The marvelous toy — Right field — Disc 2: Kumbaya — Michael row your boat ashore — Down by the riverside — Puff the magic dragon — 500 miles — Stewball — Blowin' in the wind — We shall overcome — All my trials — Weave me the sunshine — Day is done — Leaving on a jet plane — Goodnight, Irene.I listened to this one while studying (and reading) the words and the music in the book, so I'm counting it as another book read. I enjoy sing-a-long songs, especially "Puff, the Magic Dragon" which I sang with my children when they were young. I rate this one 9 of 10.
Library Loot is a weekly meme co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you would like to share a list of the loot you brought home from the library, Marg has the Mister Linky this week.
A 10 out of 10? Wow! I'll have to add that one to my list. The mamas and the papas are on my mind more and more these days as Chyna Philips (daughter of John and Michelle, I believe) is the mom of my daughter's classmate.
ReplyDeleteI have such fond memories of my late husband listening to Peter, Paul and Mary. He loved them and I can't wait to read the book. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCan't go past some Peter Paul and Mary :)
ReplyDeleteI simply adore the "Puff The Magic Dragon Song!" ADORE! It invokes happy memories of my childhood as well as the days when my girls were little and liked when I sang out loud. LOL.
ReplyDelete(They are 12 and 16 now. Need I say more? ;) )
