BTT (#18) ~ found books

Booking Through Thursday has a guest questioner, so it is heidenkind who asks:
"Have you ever read a random book left in a waiting room or on a park bench, etc., and did you like it?"

I can't remember reading a book I've run across like that, but I have been known to LEAVE a book — on purpose.  Have you ever heard of BookCrossing?  Back in 2003, I joined that group of people, who "release" books to other readers, by leaving my first book at Panera in Hixson (a suburb of Chattanooga).  Six years later, I was a blogger and wrote about it here.  That first book was Three Women by Marge Piercy, published in 1999.  Have you read it?

Hi Bonnie,

I once signed up to 'Book Crossing', but then changed my mind and de-registered.

I was a little perturbed about the thought of defacing books with the large bookplates containing 'Finders' details, as some of these books started turning up as donations in our charity shop and we were told that, because of the plates we would be unable to sell them to raise money.

Also, I did wonder about just leaving a book somewhere when I had finished with it, how many of them would just be picked up and thrown into the nearest rubbish bin, rather than being cherished and read?

I would like to think that this system really works as it was intended, as I would love to be able to share my books with others who may not have gone out and bought them otherwise.

Maybe raising this question on your blog will bring forth some comments that will encourage me to sign up again.

Have a great weekend.

Yvonne

Yvonne, back in 2003, what I used was more lke a bookmark extending above the top of the book. Nothing defaced the boos in any way. I only "released" that one book, but I still think it's a good idea.

That should be "books" -- not "boos."
